A Color Script Exercise

So a few weeks ago, Dice challenged me to partake on a super fun exercise and here's the result; a color script exercise based on Maurice Sendak's classic, Where The Wild Things Are. And since this is all about color and lighting, all designs / layouts are left in true Sendak fashion.

Art Blocks for Ghana

Yay, another finished piece! This one is for another benefit auction - the "Art Blocks for Ghana" project.

I'm very happy and privileged to have participated for such a great cause; artists from all over the world in the Animation and Illustration community have volunteered to create artwork that will help the building of a children's home in Ghana. The guidelines: create a piece of art on a square wooden board that revolves around the theme of "home."

The blog has already started to display a number of awesome artwork. With the deadline looming in a couple of weeks, I'm excited to see more pieces to be posted up soon. You can also visit the organization's website for more info regarding the eBay auction and art shows to take place in NY + LA.

My contribution is a nod to my favorite of the seasons, autumn. There's something about seeing geese fly about that makes me feel all cozy. Anyway, here are some snapshots of my process. Enjoy :)

Here's one from tonight's Long Pose Class. The class was 4 hours long so I took my time on this one. Although the pose was actually a lot more static, I did what I could at the moment to shift the weight onto the right leg. There's so many things wrong with this drawing. I'm rusty - I gotta keep getting those bad drawings out of the way.

Bear Hug

Hugging a polar bear and making it out alive is impossible unless you're willing to get mauled and torn into pieces. To remedy that pipe dream...I decided to get down with some acrylic paint. It felt so good to get back on the horse and work traditionally. I'm glad to have planned my sizes in advance and successfully found a frame at the store that gave me enough room to showcase the painting and a little bit of the lift on the edges from caking the paint onto the board. Plein Air Pastels with Bill Cone

Here's a chunk of pastels done during the course of the class, taught by Bill Cone.

This is on the other side of the Berkeley Hills in the early AM. The bushes on the f/g and m/g is kind of flat because of the same treatment of plants regarding detail and value. should've pushed the darks darker in the f/g and a bit less in the m/g.

This one's overlooking the SF Bay, atop of the Berkeley Hills during sunset. This was a fun exercise, chasing the light and all the colors in all their glory during this golden hour. In the background, you can see tons of atmosphere and fog covering the hills and costline.

This was my first attempt in attacking water with the pastels, at a man-made pond at a park near my house in San Jose. I had to forget that what i was looking at was "water" but focus on patterns, shapes, and color instead.

this has to be my favorite out of the ones on this post. i didn't let the limited palette control what i was going to put down; lots of back and forth going on here when it came to really getting that atmospheric perspective. i still feel like i could've pushed the hills in the background to be even more desaturated.

this one was at the cemetary in oakland - at some crypt, i forgot. there were beautiful views of the bay but i turned away and focused on the hills behind me along with the roadpath leading up to our site. i fought very hard to indicate shapes and light instead of rendering the hell out of something.

This update has been long overdue. Work is getting more chalenging / crazy / and most importantly fun ever since my first day. I've got a couple of personal projects lined up which I'll be blogging about - both art and non-art related. In the mean time...here's a few sketches of some folks at Yerba Buena Park. See you soon?

Color Script!

I've been wanting to do one of these bad boys for so long - it's so fun! I tried incorporating some design and composition elements in there as well just to mix things up. This one's for a personal project that I've been working on for quite some time now. Too bad it got shelved. I had story issues that I simply had to let go, but those sleepless nights did not go to waste let me tell you. I'll be posting some more pre-pro vizdev in the future. But for now, enjoy.

So I was at Comic Con last summer waiting for the Disney/Pixar panel and presentation to begin - and sitting right in front of me was this fellow. The display was sort of distracting and my company noticed as well. It was a crack up.

I'm back, hopefully this time around it'll be more frequently. I just got done getting pwned by another semester - one more to go! I'm very excited as I continue to get the fun personal projects rolling. Here's something I've been working on while I was at Electronic Arts this semester - it was like an Art internship class thing where we got to design our own mock video game. This is our main character, quite the naked chameloen, in some poses.

I love trains and treehouses! This was an older vizdev piece I recently touched up. At a glance, the story behind this is about an 11-yr old boy from Central California who goes off to the outskirts of town with his friend to build their dream treehouse. Any crits welcome, if you have any. Danke.

Here's something fresh - a piece I did earlier this year and is now at the Shrunkenheadman Gallery. Its a "bits" illustration about "generations" done while I was taking Barron's class for the first time - the topic I chose was the generations of Graffiti. Done in mixed media on found wood and cardboard.

Hot Chocolate

This was an illustration (acrylic / digital on board) I did for a zine last semester for Barron's class which was then chosen for the cover. The theme of the zine was "Hot Chocolate." If you ask me, I like it dark, thick - almost soupy, with a dash of red pepper.

This is a vizdev piece for a potential 15-sec short I'm developing with a small group of artists for our BFA class. The assignment is to create a sport spot for the Beijing Olympics - I know...what the heck does a caveman have to do with the Olympics? No idea.
